Maren Ade’s critically adored new film, Toni Erdmann, tells the story of an aging-hippie prankster attempting to reconnect with his corporate-ladder-climbing daughter. Ade’s liberating direction evokes wonderful performances from German actress Sandra Hüller and Austrian-born Peter Simonischek.

In the short clip above, it becomes clear that the film’s dynamic father-daughter duo has a long path ahead to rekindle their relationship. Be sure to see Ade’s film screening in the 54th New York Film Festival’s Main Slate section, as well as catch the director herself in an HBO Directors Dialogue on October 2!
