A mysterious stranger comes running out of a barren, snow-covered landscape; hearing screams, he heads to the river bank and saves a young boy who’s fallen in the swift currents. Although assumed to be dead, the boy is somehow revived by the stranger; later, the stranger, who calls himself Kosmos, is led by the boy’s grateful father and sister to a nearby town, where the locals greet him as a hero. With his wild appearance, penchant for enigmatic pronouncements, and supposedly miraculous powers, Kosmos is thought to be some kind of seer or holy man—but if he is, he’s not like any other anyone has ever seen or heard about. One of the brightest talents working in Turkey today, Reha Erdem here has created his most complex and challenging film, a dense tapestry of stories and images that moves from the material to the mystical and back again.
