Spurring nationwide debates in her home country, Katarzyna Rostaniec’s debut film delves into the world of teens who get the latest fashions by catering to the desires of men known as “sponsors.” Lonely at school and fresh from a small town, 14-year-old Alicja falls in with a new crowd of fierce girls who get their designer jeans and pricey cosmetics through deals struck at the garish local mall. Made after a year of journalistic research, Rostaniec’s drama captures the struggles of a teen finding a place in a world rife with confusing signals about sex, money, and friends, and filled with unprecedented pressures and temptations.
