Enrique works as an assistant to Don Eladio, a military judge known for briskly assigning death sentencing to suspected subversives after absurd show trials. Yet when the caregiver of his infirm mother becomes one of Eladio’s victims, Enrique starts to question what kind of regime he’s serving. Veteran director Imanol Uribe (Carol’s Journey) is interested here in the human drama, not in scoring political points; he depicts a society in which everyone considers him or herself a survivor of some sort.
