After making a striking directorial debut with the 2007 Boston kidnapping drama Gone Baby Gone, Affleck returned to his native Beantown for this searing crime drama with an unexpectedly complex emotional center. Set in the downtrodden, working-class Charlestown neighborhood, The Town stars Affleck as Doug MacRay, a professional bank robber and leader of a ruthless crew who pride themselves on taking what they want and getting out clean. The only family Doug has are his partners in crime, especially Jem (Jeremy Renner, in an Oscar-nominated performance), who, despite his dangerous, hair-trigger temper, is the closest thing Doug ever had to a brother. But everything changes after one job where Jem briefly takes a beautiful bank manager (Rebecca Hall) hostage. When they later discover the manager lives in Charlestown, Jem gets nervous and Doug seeks her out, never expecting to fall in love. Meanwhile, the Feds are closing in.
