Searching for his missing son in the rough mountains of Northern China, a mute, fiercely stubborn miner (martial arts star Song Yang) confronts a world of corruption led by a villainous coal tycoon (Jiang Wu). A blackmailed lawyer, whose daughter has been abducted, is caught in the middle, an unwilling partner in their mutual search. This gripping contemporary mystery is part spaghetti western, part film noir, while illustrating the realities of the Chinese rural underclass and its futile fight against oppressive social forces.
