For 16 years, Open Roads has proudly offered North American audiences the most diverse and extensive lineup of contemporary Italian film available. As always, the series includes both commercial and independent fare, ranging from a vérité documentary to a superhero movie, outrageous comedies to gripping dramas, with nine North American Premieres and in-person appearances by many of the filmmakers. NEW YORK (April 12, 2016)—The Film Society of Lincoln Center and African Film Festival, Inc. announce the lineup for the 23rd New York African Film Festival, May 4-10. Marking the 50th anniversary of Ousmane Sembène’s celebrated first feature, Black Girl, the 2016 festival is presented under the banner “Modern Days, Ancient Nights: 50 Years of African Filmmaking.” Opening with a special advance-preview town-hall event on Sunday, May 1, the festival will present 25 feature-length films and 27 short films from 26 countries, bringing another thrilling and multifaceted selection of African films from the continent and the Diaspora to New York audiences. The Film Society of Lincoln Center announces a call for entries for the fifth annual Locarno Film Festival Critics Academy, a workshop for aspiring film critics offered during the festival (August 3-13), produced in partnership with Indiewire and with support from Film Comment magazine and the Swiss Alliance of Film Journalists. The program, which has a U.S. component that takes place during the New York Film Festival, is designed to nurture promising film critics and journalists through coverage opportunities at festival screenings and events.
