Barry Jenkins talks about his early struggles in film school and the movies he discovered while there that went on to influence his work in this interview from the 54th New York Film Festival. Jenkins’s new film Moonlight screened in the festival’s Main Slate, winning over critics and audiences alike. He’ll return to the Film Society with a handpicked selection of films that inspire him, January 4-9.

NYFF Soft Focus is created by filmmakers Jeff Reichert and Farihah Zaman. The interviews were shot using a 1986 Jupiter-9 85mm, a vintage Russian lens known for its “swirly bokeh,” which gives the videos their distinctive look.
