Open Roads: New Italian Cinema 2013

Since 2001, the first summer breezes of June have brought a fresh crop of new Italian films and filmmakers to Lincoln Center. Open Roads has become the leading North American showcase for contemporary Italian cinema, as well as one of our most popular programs. Established filmmakers premiere new works alongside discoveries from fresh and emerging talent, with in-person appearances at almost every screening. So join us once again in welcoming back an old friend: Italian cinema!
Lineup
Every Blessed Day
Opening night! Actor Luca Marinelli in person for Q&A at June 6 screening!
One of the most personal voices in new Italian cinema, Virzi delivers a small and intimate romantic comedy about Antonia and Guido, a strangely-matched couple madly in love.
The Discovery at Dawn
Director Susanna Nicchiarelli in person for Q&A at June 8 screening!
A woman is given the chance to uncover the truth about her father’s violent death 30 years ago when she discovers a disconnected phone that mysteriously lets her place calls to the past.
Dormant Beauty
A compelling drama in which four interrelated characters struggle with the moral impasses and compromises of modern life. With Isabelle Huppert and Toni Servillo.
The Face of Another
Director Pappi Corsicato and writer Daniele Orlando in person for Q&A at both screenings!
In this outrageous satire of celebrity culture, the exuberant host of a popular TV show about plastic surgery is fired because the public is tired of her face, kicking off a series of surprising plot twists.
The First Man
This adaptation of Albert Camus’ unfinished last novel is part childhood memoir set in 1920s Algeria, part epic narrative of a country on the eve of revolution in the 1950s.
Handmade Cinema
Director Guido Torlonia and co-writer Laura Delli Colli (Handmade Cinema) and director Giovanna Taviani (The Rescue) in person for Q&As at both screenings!
Narrated by Chiara Mastroianni, this loving tribute to the craftsmen and artisans whose invisible hands help create the magic of cinema is brimming with archival footage and behind-the-camera scenes. Screening with: The Rescue / Il Riscato (Giovanna Taviana, 22m).
I Travel Alone
Director Maria Sole Tognazzi in person for Q&A on June 8!
Single, middle-aged, and constantly on the road, an inspector of luxury hotels is thrown into an existential crisis when she loses the emotional support of her best friend and ex-lover.
It Was the Son
Director Daniele Cipri in person for Q&A at June 7 screening!
Full of acid humor and populated with grotesque characters, Cipri’s absurd and unforgiving satire of Sicilian family life has tragedy, revenge, and a Mercedes Benz blessed with holy water.
Nina
Director Elisa Fuksas in person for Q&A on June 8!
Over a hot summer in a near-empty suburb of Rome, a young woman contemplates life amidst the district's architectural gems, gorgeously shot by architect-turned-filmmaker Fuksas.

Giordana’s Machiavellian drama dissects the Piazza Fontana bombing, highlighting the manipulations and tragic consequences of the event and subsequent investigations.
